The Joy of Mapping 4 - Summer School (TESTING UNDERWAY)

@Jimmy

Ah. Bit different from what I had in mind, which was, for example, let's say the first episode (I don't know if this is what you meant):

Hub; Player wanders around the first open "area" to select his episode. After selecting his episode, he will go to another "sub-hub" on the same map which would represent that episode.

From this sub-hub, the player then selects the actual map they want by "walking" into it. The player is then booted back to the "sub-hub" after the map is completed.

AE:

Hub - Episode 1 > Map 01 > Episode 1 > MapAC > Episode 1 > MapBJ > Episode 1 > Map02 > etc.

Suffice to say, if there is four episodes, then there is four "sub-hubs" on the hub map; which is just to say "large open areas with interesting structures for each of the map entrances" (lazily done as the "stars" here, imagine them as buildings that you can walk into that then teleports you to the desired map)

That's a fair enough way of doing things, but if I end up with 40+ maps, that's going to be a lot of portals.

Besides, each episode is going to get a dedicated opener and closer, so they will be arranged in a specific order of play.

I split the CaptainManiac derail out of this thread.

I think some of his posts should of been left behind; after all it looks like we just jump to the hub shennanigans out of the blue.

Ah, okay. nifty.

That's why I had made mention of "some maps have linear progression, others you can go to in any order" for example, completing the first mandatory map out of any episode will then unlock one "mandatory" map and two "optional" maps that the player can pick which they go to next; or prehaps a secret on one map will open a secret on another.

I don't know. Spit-balling.

@SArais Having all the maps selectable independently can make them feel a little disconnected though. If they can be tied into a few episodes in a linear format, that gives the player a much better sense of progression than simply ticking off 30 disconnected maps.

Happy July 1st! Welcome to The Joy of Mapping - Summer School. 🌞
Time to make a megawad together.

Discord server - Join NOW to be part of this!

HERE ARE YOUR THEMES!
Episode 1: Canyon/vine bases, beaches, lagoons, gardens. Most common liquid: water.
Episode 2: Autumnal ruined towns, burning/bloodied/decayed cities, wargrounds. Most common liquid: blood.
Episode 3: Green, slime-ridden corner of Hell. Mossy dens, overgrown chapels. Most common liquid: slime.
Episode 4: Space/voids. Hanging rocks, alien ships. Episode will feature many colorful liquids.

Texture packs for G/ZDoom: [Episode 1] [Episode 2] [Episode 3] [Episode 4]
Texture packs for Boom: [Episode 1] [Episode 2] [Episode 3] [Episode 4]

With the themes revealed:

  • Please either make a post in this thread saying which episode you'd like to map for, OR (preferably) join my Discord and look in the #session-general channel for instructions on how to be a part of the session.
  • Please only choose one. You can always change your mind. If you want to make more than map, that's fine, but we all should be working on just one at a time.
  • If you want to make an episode opener or finale, you'll have to join my Discord as soon as you can to get in quick and secure your place, as only eight slots in the project exist for these special levels, and they might all go straight away, since Discord is an instant chat medium as opposed to a forum.
  • I'll tally up the posts in this thread, and add you all to the teams accordingly. You'll then all get access to unique text/voice channels on my Discord. Ideally the teams should be of similar size so please be considerate when voting!

Time to kick back and map. Have fun, everyone! o/

Good news, if you were struggling to get something in on time, then you now have the weekend to do so.

If you haven't already submitted your final map, your new deadline is July 10th @ 12AM EST. I've updated the OP's countdown timer to account for this.

Hope to see all those of you who are interested at the finish line! o/

Looks like the Discord server went offline in an outage. EDIT: it's back.

There's just 5 hours to go before the deadline passes - I expect it to be back by then but if not, well, you guys let off the hook and I'll waive the deadline. :P Just get your submissions to me somehow, preferably by posting in this thread.

Here's your template for submissions again.

Huh. So be it. You need better staff, Jimmy. These "tutors" seek only to drive our community into the ground, unappreciative of the new-blood, and absolutely zero consideration for any point of view that isn't their own. Extremely selfish.

It's funny that you have nothing better to do. Shouldn't you be working on your map? It was unbearable.

Looking to go out in a blaze of sour grapes eh? I'd say you should take this as a learning opportunity, to maybe consider where you went wrong and how you shouldn't make those mistakes again, but it's probably falling on deaf ears at this point.

Yes. I went wrong listening to old men, running the world.
A new age.

Jokey references aside, I should of never listened to any of them, and only ever did what I wanted with my maps.

Lesson learned.
